Rachael Rocamora’s Notes  to:

C. Otto Scharmer

For starters, Dr. Scharmer, you may be relieved to know:  I won't 'hit' you with all this, but here's the list of topics I've been saving for you:  Out of all that, you'll find some commentary below the list.

Wondered if you've seen this:

And now from the twentieth century onward a third source begins. It arises because an ever-increasing number of persons will experience an extension, an enhancement of the forces of cognition which is not brought about through meditation, concentration, and other exercises ... connected with the evolution of humanity ... in the twentieth century, in a more enhanced manner than has so far been the case.

                                 ~~Rudolf Steiner

You / your character in Presence said that "It’s almost like we are living in a split world … On the one hand, many people are experiencing a profound opening.  But they are also experiencing a buildup of pressure, tension, anxiety.  Time is speeding up.  .. we’re struggling simultaneously to speed up and slow down.  As the need for reflection and deeper learning grows, the pressures against that need being fulfilled grow, too."

[[[There are also internal pressures having to do with these experiences themselves that are common, such as found on this page, if you want to see the whole article:

Thus far, this movement has been comprised of all these individual interests, institutions, types of experiences, specialties or special-studies and concerns, not to mention the how-many-millions of Experiencers who quietly live out of their consequent inner-directedness, having rarely if ever admitted this to anyone else.  Also,  exceptional experiences may be the impetus behind probably a sizeable portion of  community / activism interests, but this fact is not usually openly disclosed.  Although the idea of people telling their [EHE] experiences and of their meaning and motivating force in their lives has slowly begun to demonstrate its value to people, still, up to now, we continue to suffer from a kind of pervasive, felt isolationism.

We need to talk to each other; we need to share our mutually affirming stories and see how these tie us all together into a meaningful and vibrant mega-web of Community -- and on levels we rarely imagined before, except theoretically, such as for example, Carl Jung's concept of the collective unconscious and superconscious, to which we all contribute and by which we are in turn constantly influenced.  [We will begin to utilize this much-in-evidence, unconscious phenomenon consciously and with studied intent -- but that's another story!]]]

[[[Another thought, re:  ameliorating that type of stress:  I anticipate taking Presence and Theory U to the EHE Study Groups, where people will be working with many different issues about exceptional human experiences and incorporating all sorts of tools and processes with this broad base of knowledge in a hands-on way in their daily lives.

And also marry this in significant ways with activist interests, small support groups and .. as I'm writing, more possibilities are piling up, but you get the idea and I certainly hear what you are saying, not to mention from experience.]]]

[re:  same conversation above]

BSF:  Something seems to be shifting, but the changes are subtle .. fragile..

[[[I think this pressure could be corrected or transformed as a pervasive experience, once we **normalize** these exceptional events as simply part of what it means to be Human and educate people to realize the enormity of their value to all of us.  People will find new support in each other and feel more confident and open about their experiences. ...]]]

JJ:  Many of our interviewees over last 5 years talked about profound personal experiences that altered their worldview and then said that they’d never told anyone else what they told us.  The opening that is occurring is disorienting, and people can easily feel alone.

[[[Imagine what a different world this can be with Theory U, the EHE perspective, Presencing, and Dialogue (Wm. Isaacs) as common knowledge, which probably isn't as fantastic as it may sound right this minute, given the new darling in the Sciences -- Consciousness!]]]

[[[David Spangler’s idea of the Re-Imagination of the World:

As people come to believe more fully in the open miracle of this moment, this thought, and as we together with increasingly unified INTENTION re-envision the world we want and act toward that purpose, emphasis on collective intent, and observe what unfolds from within to without … we are indeed co-creating the New World.  But even though we think of this New World outside us, it is the New World within us, together, collectively, that is coming to ‘meet and be met’ that is the miracle.]]]

Rhea A. White, as both a near-death experiencer and a scientist, describes this shift in “The Collective Message Inherent in Exceptional Human Experience”:

The new paradigm, or taken-for-granted worldview that is issuing forth from our very being, is not many but One.  This new view is revealed by all exceptional human experiences (EHEs), or anomalous experiences that have been personalized, and that lead to personal and transpersonal growth and the experience of being inside a new worldview, the Experiential Paradigm (White, 1995/ 1997).  I named it that because to be known it must be experienced, not simply thought out.  ..

At the new level, which in effect marks the end of what one could call the "modern mindset," the possibilities of growth are far beyond our current comprehension.  The direction of our new growth is indicated by our exceptional human experiences.  These experiences (and it doesn't matter whether one studies one's own experiences or those of others) point to a world that is not nearly as physically limited as the old paradigm dictated.  On the contrary, some (e.g., psychic and death-related experiences) indicate it is limitless.  Some (the mystical experiences) indicate it is a holonomic universe in which everything is everything else.  In some (encounter experiences), the world "out there" relates to us individually, and in others (enhanced experiences) we perceive, know, and act in mysterious and wondrous ways from a larger self--unknown except in such experiences.

It is a world we are meant to inhabit.  It is a world in which one nurtures oneself by nurturing others and by not turning away from nurturing oneself as well, as each of us, too, is a person, and ultimately we are one.  It is a world in which the urge for further growth and connection can be resisted only temporarily, for satiation is fully experienced only in the moments in which one becomes more than one was previously, and knows it.  And even then, as Santayana wrote, the function of these experiences is to catalyze still further experiences, which in their turn would entail still more growth, as he also pointed out.  It is a world in which one knows that to lie to or willfully harm another being is to be untrue to and injure oneself.  But it is also a world in which "number one" still counts as much as it did in the modern worldview, but in the new view this is so only because one’s self, no less than anyone or anything else, springs from that One who it is said is "without a second."  In a word, this new world is the Self we all are, and it will not be at an end until the whole creation travails no longer. And even that endpoint is likely to be but a new beginning.

The modern worldview labeled this a childish impractical dream. In its place we have created what is becoming a nightmare world. If we pay attention to our EHEs, if we can still recall them, or attend fully to those of others, we can awaken.  As soon as we do, those EHEs will show forth the new world.  We are called not to do but to be. Not to be practical but to be who we are.  And who we are shouts to us from any and all exceptional experiences.  Far from being chimeras, EHEs are the bedrock of the new dispensation.  If we wish to take practical steps to save ourselves and this globe, let us gravitate to the More that we are and once and for all let go of what Shakespeare so long ago decried as our irritable penchant for "reaching after fact and reason."  If enough of us do it, we can bring the new to pass.  We can do so not only by sheer numbers, which would influence the conscious mindset of others.  But there is another dimension of influence--an "inside" approach. If we are One, then those who go high enough and deep enough within themselves are likely also to influence the heights and depths of like-minded people and possibly even the whole species, regardless of geographic location.  What a wondrous and practical application for psi--to awaken the truths sleeping in the depths of others who are whole continents and other cultures and languages apart! (I stress here that potentially this capacity is every human’s potential, anywhere in the world, regardless of race or culture.  In this area, many first peoples are likely to be more advanced than Westerners, though some may lack the awareness of global consciousness, which is (fortunately) being aided by Western technology.

JJ:  What will it take to shift the whole?  I’ve been wondering if shifting the whole requires deep change on a scale most of us have never experienced, are we ready for this kind of change?

[[[But when it happens from within, one by one, it certainly can be overwhelming – personally transforming – without being this kind of overwhelming—as JJ implies. And in fact it can be so comforting and mutually empowering to realize other people are and have been experiencing the same kind of thing as oneself, once people open up and begin to share their stories enough to realize this.   Rhea White calls this “the new dispensation” ; I think of it as the New Story.]]]

OS:  I’ve experienced this element – the evolving future field – as a being that is actually looking at me.  in the moment you feel that gaze, you feel the world stopping.  After that you’re no longer the same.

[[[That instantly reminded me of Blake’s poem:

Who would decline a sacrifice

If once his soul had been accosted,

His virtue recognized,

And he was assured that

The Watcher, the Holy One, followed

Him ever with long affectionate glances

Of inexhaustible love?]]]

OS’s family’s house burning to the ground naturally reminds of three other similarly devastating incidents:

1.   Emanuel Swedenborg – reported ‘watching’ a fire burn homes near his own from several hundred miles away and that stopped just short of his house.

2.  Thomas Edison watched basically all his work burn up after years and thousands of experiments, as his laboratory burned to the ground.  He purportedly said, when someone asked how he could be so calm, how he could manage that.  And Edison said something to the effect that this was all his mistakes, and freed up everything to move on to something better.  [need to find this]

3.   Rudolf Steiner’s first Goethianum burned to the ground, the result of arson.  He also had a brave take on seeing this occur.

[[[Shifting from my past to my future, I realize I’m dealing with great forces and beings incarnate and discarnate.  I have to do this – this unique Voice is so important.  A “glamour shot” alone [iShift, Ken Wilbur, etc.] without this grassroots movement to contrast to it would be a terrible mistake.  This collective grassroots Movement’s voice, ultimately that of “the meek”  -- those who are the bulk of Humanity as a whole -- that Voice is essential in the global consciousness as a whole and in the worldwide dialog.  This is how that 15/85 divide will be healed.]]]

[[[This story has been waiting to catch up with you for a while now, Dr. Scharmer:  It came as no small surprise to me, reading what is surely the first business and economics book ever to grace my life, to feel from the very first pages the clear intimations of a familiar 'voice', that of Rudolf Steiner!  Only, page after page, there was no hint of his name.   I stopped abruptly and went looking for Steiner in the index, and was left scratching my noggin -- although I did find Goethe.  Yet every page shouted [gleefully!] Steiner-and-friends!

The very hint of his  presence here was a powerful affirmation, as it relates to an incident a few years ago when I felt 'visited' by him during a dark moment in regards to this work.  So this has been a kind of Chinese -- or should I say Viennese! -- puzzle of continually being surprised by new signs of his support; hence the impact of discovering Steiner's overlighting presence once again, where I had not imagined to find him.

Anyway, by nearly the end of the book I was fairly flummoxed still not having seen any confirmation of my now solid expectations.  I was ready to believe that four Steiner scholars had written the book.  I finally put your book down long enough to do some searching on the internet.  After a good bit of wandering amid the collective webworks of four incredibly accomplished people, again, unexpectedly and having just about given up, short of writing one of you or the publisher, I stumbled across this line about your father as "one of the pioneers of biodynamic farming in Germany."  At last!!  But the final surprise, even to me, was ... I burst into tears!  ;-D

Even though I've been with a Steiner study group for several years, I'm hardly a Steiner scholar.  But I feel a special closeness to him.   I've been looking forward to this next segment of the journey with this project, to find the best co-adventurers / collaborators who have the depth and breadth of understanding such as articulated so sensitively in your book.  As you can imagine, Dr. Scharmer, it's no wonder I feel led to seek you out.  And yes, he continues to be a subtle, sustaining influence.  That event, unsought and most unexpected, 'haunts' me still.  I wanted to share it with you, a GERMAN Steiner-bahkti -- I'm still in awe about your father! -- because I want to believe he 'haunts' you, too!]]]

[[[Please do consider joining forces with me to help ensure that this web project becomes all it can be as a conduit of blessing in this uncertain world.   I believe the successful manifestation of this work, can be a major cause agent in the bringing to life the Awakened Consciousness and Voice of this Movement.  At the very least, would you and your friends be willing to give me a Tom-Cronin type of chance to spend a couple of hours, or better:  a couple of days! with you to 'pour my heart out' as Dr. Jaworski did in that phenomenal synchronistic adventure?

I feel, if you and Drs. Senge, Flowers and Jaworski really see the incredible co-creative potential between your leadership work and this from-the-ground-up work -- as even same-same and the fact we need both top-down and ground-up [not to mention its implications for the 15/85% challenge], you can't help but share my vision and enthusiasm for this unfolding future.

I am going to find Somebody to take this on with me.  It must be someone or those who have something on the order of your visioning, capabilities, integrity and I want to say Heart in the way we both refer to it in relation to Presence and also to the outcome of EHEs.  This work needs to be a global phenomenon, a global presence.  It will take other giants walking the Earth, such as you four, to give this work that kind of opportunity to achieve its greatest potential.

[Relatedly:]  Before President Obama’s campaign proved me right:   I’ve long thought with the internet and cheaper phones, if as we connect with each other, people to people, across all boundaries all over the globe, and if we can find spiritual or neutral language to talk about what most at first glance would call “spiritual” in a new way that connects all of us and …. as a global Grassroots movement based on this connectivity to make a difference from the ground up, THAT would be the best way to change the world.  President Obama's internet campaign success was one of the miracles of our times!  I believe that is similarly possible with Ahhh-TheLight and wHeretwoworldsTouch.  As activists, as consumers, as Experiencers and Empaths, as people who have acquired a certain depth and breadth of what Rhea A. White describes as “moral consciousness and reverence for all life,” what can we not accomplish together, if we are united through the Awakening of the heart in this way?

=-

[[[In my simple mind the "cure" to the 15 / 85 difficulty can be none other than unity through the collective discovery of the Self we all are.  We must simultaneously approach this outcome from both the ground up and the top down in order to converge in a powerfully positive way. It must be from both directions, and it will not be traditional in any sense.  We must create a new vessel within which to work together toward a single purpose, such as reflected so clearly in both the bottom of the U and in the aftereffects of EHEs.]]]
