Two UFO Sightings:

During the Rash of Sightings along

the Eastern Seaboard in 1967

I saw two UFOs in the 1967 wave in Greensboro , NC , one with a group of several high school friends, the other with my mother, all of whom also witnessed them.  Both of  the events took place within about 100 yards of each other, and I’m thinking they were at least a few-to-several weeks apart.  In the first we were all in jackets, maybe February or March.  The second, we were in warm-weather clothing, maybe April or even late March.  The second event was enough removed from the first that it was definitely not on our minds when it occurred.

The first time was well after dark and took place at the side of a small lake near the high school I went to.  Someone pointed, “Look!”  And we all saw a very modest sized ‘star’, about the size of the North Star and in roughly that direction.  It looked more like a meteorite gone berserk.   Over the span of a few seconds, 6-8 of us watched as its colors changed across the range of soft orange-yellow-green, which seemed to repeat 2-3 times, rainbow-like, not as flashes of separate colors.  As it did so, directionally it made a wide-angled ‘w’ with absolutely sharp ‘corners’, all at the same rate of apparently intense speed, over a perceived distanced no wider than my hand, then instantly disappeared.  That’s what I saw; the first person must have seen more of this behavior before alerting the entire group.  It was too small to look like anything other than a remarkably colorful, small star.  There was no sound associated with it.  It took place within a day or two of the many sightings up and down the eastern seaboard [USA] making a splash on both national and local news, though I am not sure if it was before I heard about that on the news or after.  I'm inclined to think it was before, and in fact quite a few people in our area must have also seen such phenomena because it made the front page of our local paper as well.  So maybe this was within the same day or two that so much of this took place.

The other sighting, also silent, took place within less than 100 yards, in an  east-south-east direction, where it would be natural to view the rising moon.  Mom was driving and we had turned up a road perpendicular to the one we had been standing on by the lake, which took us up a slightly bicycle-pumping hill to the school.  Just after we had turned the corner, Mom and I saw something so amazing, Mom completely stopped the car!  Simultaneously we gaped at each other, looked back, and what we had seen was GONE!  We were looking up and beyond the buildings of the school cresting the hill to our left and ahead of us.  What I saw was a stupendously HUGE rendition of the moon, as if it were, say, 40 miles away, rather than 200,000 or so; it had taken over nearly the whole of our visual field, sitting in the car, looking out the front window.  It was twilight, and the colors were a ‘natural’ spherical blending of moon-cream tones and soft-twilight blues, even defining moon-like craters.  In fact, I initially thought it WAS the moon!  It was rising over the building and a stand of trees, its visible arch inferred we were seeing about 120 degrees, only it was moving slightly -- like a moon rising, only faster, like a blimp, though this was impossibly larger than any known blimp.

What’s so peculiar, looking back, is, we spoke of these things so little, even at the time!  Kind of like sharing a strange dream that is promptly dropped or forgotten, once shared.  It was more than 3 decades later, nearing the time of my mother’s passing in 2001 that I brought up this memory again, re-describing what I had seen.  In my retelling, it was obvious I had assumed we had seen the same thing.  But she said that was not what she had seen at all!!  Yet, she was plainly just as riveted and amazed as I at the time of the sighting.  Believe me, I have wondered a zillion times since why I didn’t naturally ask the obvious question, What did you see???  I was that stupefied by her remark.

I recall at the time of the second sighting, I thought we compared notes about what we had seen – we agreed it was huge.  I remember saying something about how it looked just like the moon with ‘the whole nine yards’ of craters and a surrealistic, romanticized coloring – perfectly natural, just so totally gorgeous.  The conversation struck me as our basically agreeing on what we had seen, although I do not remember Mom offering any further or contrasting descriptors.  She was even present when I described it to Dad excitedly when we got home, and I don't remember her making any remarks that would have given me the impression she had seen something else.

One of the strangest ‘coincidences’ of this to me is that the sightings were days-to-weeks apart, yet I was merely 100 yards or less from the spot where the first sighting was made.
